Situational Awareness – Active Shooter: Becoming Jason Bourne

This presentation will cover the four types of workplace violence as identified by OSHA and the FBI, including a review of past workplace and public events (where active shooter incidents have occurred) with an emphasis on situational awareness and how employees can train themselves to be more aware of their surroundings. The concept of run-hide-fight as outlined by the department of Homeland Security will be reviewed (as a best practice to ensure safety), including a discussion about the most important steps employers and employees can take to reduce the possibility of a work-place violence event. We will cover the tenets of situational awareness and how employees can train themselves to be more mindful and present in their daily lives so that may increase their chances of surviving an active shooter event.

The presentation is approximately 1.25 hours long and is presented by Cathi L. Marx, ALCM, COSS, COEA, CHPP.

Presenter Bio

Cathi L. Marx, ALCM, COSS, COEA, CHPP

Cathi is the co-founder and former President of Aspen Risk Management Group, a company of TRISTAR. Recently retired, she has over 30 years of experience in the Occupational Safety and Risk Management field with extensive capability in threat and risk assessments for businesses, schools, and public entities. She is a sought-after speaker and presenter, having provided security and active shooter / situational awareness training to thousands of employers across the country.

As the worldwide safety manager for a technology company, Cathi was responsible for developing and implementing the company’s Business Recovery and Continuation Program. For over 20 years, she has supported numerous religious organizations by helping develop active shooter protocols, training staff and congregants in active-shooter response, and designing target hardening systems. She has worked closely with local law enforcement and the Anti-Defamation League.

Cathi is the recipient of numerous safety accolades, including Safety Professional of the Year (ASSP), Insurance Woman of the Year (IIAB), and International Risk Manager of the Year (AIP).

She is a 30-year member of the American Society of Safety Professionals and is a Certified Homeland Protection Professional through the National Sheriffs Association. Before her safety career, she served eight years in the United States Coast Guard Reserves, responsible for safely loading and offloading military explosives on civilian ships.
